Description
The Baxter Building was torn down in 1925 by the University of Louisville to make way for the Speed Art Museum . Location : Belknap Campus : on site of present-day Speed Art Museum . The Baxter Building served as a the main building for the House of Refuge and Louisville Industrial School of Reform , 1861-1925 , and as a Union Hospital during the Civil War . It also housed University administration offices . Named in honor of John G . Baxter , Louisville mayor and president of Louisville Industrial School of Reform . Type of architecture : Renaissance Revival .
