Description
"This
great
painting
was
later
renamed
, with
fitting
opportunism
, The
Premonition
of
Civil
War.
"
(Caption)
; "The
events
of
October
1934
, and his
scare
in
Barcelona
,
seem
to have
convinced
Dali
that
civil
war
was a
real
possibility
in
Spain
.
It
was a
conviction
many
people
found
difficult
to
avoid
at the
time
.
Already
, that
May
,
Dali
had
done
preliminary
drawings
for an
ambitious
painting
showing
people
tearing
each
other
to
pieces
.
Contrary
to his
claims
in the
Secret
Life
,
though
, the
painting
was not
begun
on
Dali's
return
to
Paris
that
autumn
but in
early
1936
,
when
the
possibility
of
civil
war
in
Spain
had
become
a
probability
. The
great
work
,
one
of
Dali's
finest
from this
period
, was
first
entitled
Soft
Construction
with
Boiled
Beans
and
later
renamed
, with
fitting
opportunism
, The
Premonition
of
Civil
War
.
It
showed
, he
wrote
,
'a
vast
human
body
breaking
out
into
monstrous
excrescences
of
arms
and
legs
tearing
at
one
another
in a
delirium
of
auto-strangulation'
.
