Description	"This great painting was later renamed, with fitting opportunism, The Premonition of Civil War." (Caption); "The events of October 1934, and his scare in Barcelona, seem to have convinced Dali that civil war was a real possibility in Spain. It was a conviction many people found difficult to avoid at the time. Already, that May, Dali had done preliminary drawings for an ambitious painting showing people tearing each other to pieces. Contrary to his claims in the Secret Life, though, the painting was not begun on Dali's return to Paris that autumn but in early 1936, when the possibility of civil war in Spain had become a probability. The great work, one of Dali's finest from this period, was first entitled Soft Construction with Boiled Beans and later renamed, with fitting opportunism, The Premonition of Civil War. It showed, he wrote, 'a vast human body breaking out into monstrous excrescences of arms and legs tearing at one another in a delirium of auto-strangulation'. (Excerpt, p.389)
