Description
"
Picasso
did
forty-five
studies
for
Guernica
. The
one
illustrated
here
shows
the
dying
horse
and the
mother
with the
dead
child
. They have been
changed
in the
final
painting
,
although
they
retain
their
basic
character
. The
Cubist
neck
of the
horse
has a
stronger
curve
in the
drawing
, and its
protruding
teeth
seem
to
hang
from the
mouth
. The
woman
howls
in
despair
as in the
painting
, but in the
drawing
she
crawls
on the
ground
and the
baby
flops
over
like
a
rag
doll
.
Picasso's
spontaneous
,
dynamic
drawing
technique
is
evident
in this
study
,
particularly
in the
horse's
mane
and the
areas
of
shading
. The
individualized
anguish
of the
figures
in the
drawing
becomes
generalized
, and
thus
-
as with the
Demoiselles
d'Avignon
-
assumes
mythic
proportions
in the
final
work.
