Description
"With its
somewhat
distant-looking
quality
and
distinctive
crown
of
olive
leaves
, this
statue
is
most
likely
a
memorial
portrait
.
Although
the
head
and
body
originally
came
from
two
separate
statues
, they are
chronologically
consistent
. The
face's
triangular
shape
and
expressive
features
strongly
suggest
that
it
was
executed
during
the
Claudian
era
. The
toga
, with its
ample
drapery
,
broad
folds
,
delicate
,
light
pleats
, and
generously
scaled
umbo
,
is
indeed
a
work
of the
second
half
of the
first
century
A.D
.
[…]
The
child
depicted
is
about
seven
years
old
, in
Roman
times
the
middle
of his
pueritia
(boyhood)
,
which
lasted
until
puberty
.
[…]
.
Around
his
neck
, this
young
togatus
wears
a
bulla
.
[…]
The
toga
worn
by
pueri
,
whether
boys
or
girls
, was a
child's
form
of the
purple-bordered
toga
praetexta
.
[…]
High
priests
and
magistrates
also
wore
the
toga
praetexta
as a
sign
of
distinction
rather
than a
uniform
.
Among
children
, the
garment
served
to
distinguish
free
children
from
others
; in the
adult
world
it
signified
individuals
who
had
public
responsibilities
in the
city
.
[…]
It
may
thus
seem
strange
that a
memorial
statue
,
intended
for a
small
monument
in a
cemetery
, would have a
pose
so
similar
to that of a
Roman
magistrate
exercising
his
prerogatives
. The
capsa
(storage
case
for
books
and
papers)
at the
boy's
feet
, the
volumen
(or
scroll)
he
holds
in his
hand
, and his
declamatory
pose
are
neither
characteristic
of the
reality
of
childhood
, or
evocative
of
death
, but in the
case
of this
statue
, the
sculptor
and
patrons
had a
number
of
intentions
. The
sculptor
was
adhering
to
established
representative
formulas
:
it
was not his
role
to
innovate
or
deviate
from the
standard
for
depicting
a
togatus
grasping
a
volumen
with a
capsa
at his
feet
. The
boy's
family
would have
wished
to have the
child
represented
with the
dignity
due
a
free
Roman
citizen
, with a
statue
that
conformed
to
established
Roman
tradition
,
showing
the
boy
in an
attitude
that
suggested
the
man
he would have
become
had he
lived
.
Finally
, the
boy's
orator's
pose
exalts
the
life
of the
mind
.
[…]
In the
Platonistic
tradition
,
intellectual
and
artistic
work
in
pursuit
of the
beautiful
and the
just
was a
means
by
which
the
soul
could
surmount
the
weaknesses
of the
body
.
Thus
depiction
of the
crown
of
olive
leaves
from the
tree
sacred
to
Minerva
,
goddess
of
wisdom
,
is
very
deliberate.
