Description
"The
nose
,
chin
, and
fingers
on the
right
hand
and the
complete
left
hand
are
modern
. This
exceptionally
well-preserved
statue
is
striking
for its
elegant
pose
and the
complexity
of the
garment
and
hairstyle
. The
very
young
girl
represented
(but
is
it
only
a
portrait?)
has
styled
her
hair
in a
very
unusual
manner
-
parted
in the
middle
with
small
spit
curls
above
the
forehead
and on the
temples
, as in
certain
portraits
of
Agrippina
as
Venus
;
yet
in the
case
of this
idealized
face
,
locks
of
hair
are
pulled
back
to the
top
and
back
of the
head
and on the
nape
of the
neck
to
form
three
knots
.
[…]
At
first
glance
, the
figure's
bearing
and
garments
seem
simple
:
leaning
on her
right
leg
, with her
left
foot
in a
sandal
set
slightly
forward
, the
young
girl
wears
a
thin
pleated
tunic
under
a
wool
cloak
,
which
she
is
preparing
to
throw
back
over
her
left
shoulder
with her
right
hand
. The
exact
arrangement
of the
clothing
is
more
complex
than
it
appears
: the
cloak
tucked
under
the
left
armpit
is
kept
in
place
by the
left
arm
,
which
is
held
forward
, and
it
seems
to
reappear
under
her
chest
ready
to be
draped
over
the
left
shoulder
,
giving
the
impression
that the
young
girl
is
wearing
two
layers
of
clothing
. The
stark
contrast
between
the
two
fabrics
and the
regular
,
nearly
straight
cut
of the
cloak
reaching
to the
bottom
of the
legs
evokes
Greek
works
of the
fourth
century
B.C
., in
particular
the
muse
holding
a
double
flute
on
one
of the
Mantinea
plaques
attributed
to
Praxiteles's
workshop
.
[…]
But
both
the
young
girl's
hairstyle
and the
complexity
of the
upper
folds
of her
garment
are
drawn
from the
repertoire
of
Hellenistic
sculpture
.
Several
muses
feature
clothing
rendered
in a
similar
, if not
identical
,
manner
[…].
