This
mosaic
"
decorated
the
vertical
bar
of the
T-form
figured
composition
of the
dining
room
floor
to
which
the
mosaic
of
Pasiphae
and
Daedalus
belonged
. The
thick
swastika-meander
band
in
perspective
at the
top
was the
partition
between
the
two
emblemata
and was
repeated
on its
other
three
sides
as
well
. The
meander
band
enclosed
squares
with
Solomon
knots
alternating
with
rectangles
showing
birds
. The
U
space
on
which
the
couches
would have been
placed
was
covered
with a
geometric
composition
. The
inner
border
of the
panel
shows
a
row
of
wave
crests
and a
laurel
wreath
meeting
in the
middle
on the
sides
with
oval
forms
. The
innermost
listels
overlap
on the
corners
as if
framing
an
actual
picture
.

The
Dionysian
scenes
constitute
a
substantial
portion
of the
Zeugma
mosaics
.
Greek
mythology
holds
that
Dionysus
was the
first
to
build
a
bridge
-
of
ivy
and
vine
-
across
the
Euphrates
and the
place
that the
river
'was
spanned
was
called
the
Span
[Zeugma]'
. The
figures
in the
mosaic
are
identified
with
inscriptions
in
Greek
and
show
Dionysus
,
Nike
and a
maenad
.
Dionysus
is
shown
standing
in his
chariot
. His
wreathed
head
is
nimbed
. In his
right
hand
he
holds
a
thyrsus
,
carrying
a
spear
point
at the
top
.
It
is
adorned
with
leaves
and
ribbons
at the
top
,
middle
, and
bottom
. His
other
hand
comes
out
of the
drapery
and
is
shown
with an
open
palm
. He
is
dressed
in the
triumphal
Dionysian
style
in a
long
tunic
with a
gold
band
above
the
waist
, on the
visible
arm
and
wrist
. His
red
mantle
covering
his
left
shoulder
falls
down
over
this
arm
, and at the
back
. The
chariot
has a
pair
of
eight-spoked
wheels
and
is
drawn
by
panthers
. The
reins
of the
animals
are in the
hands
of the
Nike
, or
winged
Victory
who
stands
to the
god's
left
side
in the
chariot
. To the
right
a
maenad
(bacchante)
dances
in a
swirling
movement
as she
clashes
her
cymbals
. She
is
dressed
in a
loose
large
tunic
with
overfolding
over
the
hips
. Her
shawl
and
skirt
emphasize
her
swirling
movement
. A
cap
with
ribbons
is
placed
on her
head
. Her
feet
are
shod
in
long
leather
boots.
