Description
"This
mosaic
decorated
the
bottom
of a
shallow
pool
[…]
. The
hole
at its
center
belonged
to a
water
jet
.
[…]
Its
border
consists
of a
band
of
twisted
ribbon
between
plain
bands
. The
emblema
shows
one
of the
popular
episodes
related
to the
Trojan
War
: the
discovery
of
Achilles
.
Ancient
literature
informs
us that the
hero's
mother
Thetis
knew
that her
son
would
never
return
if he
joined
the
Trojan
expedition
.
Disguising
him as a
girl
, she
entrusted
him to
Lycomedes
,
king
of
Scyros
.
When
the
rumors
that
Achilles
was
hiding
at
Lycomedes'
palace
on the
island
of
Scyros
off
Euboea
,
among
the
king's
daughters
and
disguised
as
one
of them, was
heard
,
Odysseus
,
dressed
as a
merchant
and
accompanied
by his
friends
,
went
to
recruit
him.
Lycomedes
allowed
them to
search
the
palace
but if
it
were not for the
quick-witted
Odysseus
they
might
have
never
detected
Achilles
.
Odysseus
spread
gifts
suitable
for
women
in the
hall
and
asked
the
ladies
to
choose
the
ones
they
liked
. He had also
arranged
for a
trumpet
to be
blown
.
Achilles
,
disguised
as a
girl
,
thinking
that they were
being
attacked
,
immediately
snatched
up
the
arms
which
were
included
among
the
gifts
.
[…]
The
place
in
which
the
event
is
represented
is
conceived
as a
hall
with
pillars
and
fluted
columns
carrying
Doric
capitals
and
supporting
plain
architraves
, with those of the
second
row
diminishing
in
size
to
give
depth
to the
scene
.
Above
the
wall
which
connects
them
is
a
spiked
parapet
of
crossed
bars
with
shields
at their
centers
.
[…]
In the
center
Achilles
,
still
in a
girl's
clothes
,
is
shown
advancing
to his
left
about
to
rush
in the
direction
from
which
the
sound
of the
trumpet
comes
. He
is
represented
as a
beautiful
youth
with
red
hair
, his
face
bearing
a
feminine
look
. He
is
dressed
in a
long
tunic
with a
large
overfold
reaching
the
hips
. The
hems
against
the
torso
, at the
edge
of the
fold
and
where
it
reaches
the
ground
carry
a
gold-colored
band
. The
garment
leaves
the
right
part
of the
torso
and his
right
leg
and
foot
naked
, the
heel
of this
foot
being
his
only
vulnerable
spot
.
[…]
He was to be
killed
by an
arrow
of
Paris
towards
the
end
of the
Trojan
War
which
struck
his
right
heel
. His
right
shoe
is
shown
on the
floor
.
When
he was
born
his
mother
Thetis
had
dipped
him in the
river
Styx
to
make
him
immortal
. His
right
heel
by
which
she
held
him,
however
, was
left
out
of the
water
and
become
his
only
vulnerable
part
.
Achilles'
right
hand
has
grasped
the
handle
of a
long
spear
. His
thumb
seems
to have
gone
through
the
leather
throwing
loop
of the
weapon
. The
spear's
metallic
leaf-shaped
point
is
barbed
. His
other
arm
goes
through
the
arm
band
of a
heavy
concave
shield
and his
hand
grasps
it
by its
grip
. The
shield's
interior
shows
a
row
of
dentils
around
the
rim
. His
sword
has a
lion-shaped
pommel
and
hangs
from the
leather
strap
which
is
worn
obliquely
across
the
chest
.
[…]
During
his
stay
on
Scyros
,
Achilles
is
said
to have
seduced
Deidameia
,
one
of
Lycomedes'
daughters
.
[…]
Deidameia
is
dressed
in a
sleeveless
tunic
and a
mantle
which
envelops
her
upper
body
in a
huge
circle
as if
filled
with the
wind
. Her
hair
is
parted
in the
middle
and
adorned
with a
thick
gold
band
. From the
visible
ear
a
pearl
earring
in the
shape
of a
clover
hangs
. Her
feet
are
shod
in
similar
boots
to
Achilles
. Her
right
arm
,
adorned
by
bracelets
,
is
extended
towards
Achilles
as if to
prevent
him from
joining
the
expedition
.
[…]
To the
left
in
rich
attire
King
Lycomedes
is
shown
. His
head
carries
a
ribbon
which
falls
on his
back
and a
sun-hat
. The
pommel
of his
sword
is
in the
form
of a
griffon's
head
. To the
right
Odysseus
is
represented
. He
wears
a
white
tunic
decorated
with
vertical
stripes
on
each
side
. His
mantle
rests
on the
left
shoulder
and
falls
to the
ground
at his
back
. His
headdress
is
typical
for him
when
represented
in the
composition
of the
discovery
of
Achilles
. His
sword
with a
circular
pommel
hangs
from the
strap
worn
against
his
chest
. On his
feet
are
cross-laced
hunter's
boots
.
Behind
him
is
a
soldier
wearing
a
helmet
with
cheek
guards
,
military
costume
and
short
leather
boots
. His
slightly
upturned
head
implies
that he
is
in the
act
blowing
a
trumpet
as
arranged
by
Odysseus
. In the
background
the
king's
frightened
daughters
and
other
palace
women
are
shown.
