Description
The "
border
shows
a
row
of
stepped
pyramids
and a
band
of
guilloche
, and
between
these a
wide
acanthus
scroll
. The
latter
consists
of
foliate
male
masks
similar
to those
placed
in the
corners
and from
which
branches
spring
in
either
direction
. In the
middle
of
each
side
the
branches
meet
on the
sides
of
foliate
female
masks
flanked
by
hunting
scenes
where
Erotes
are
shown
in the
act
of
killing
wild
animals
.
[…]
The
representation
in the
emblema
is
identified
by an
inscription
in
Greek
as
'Synaristosas'
(literally
,
'those
who
are
having
their
breakfast
together')
placed
above
the
heads
of the
three
seated
figures
. This was the
title
of
one
of the
lost
works
of the
playwright
Menander
(342-290
BCE)
. The
figures
wear
female
masks
. The
stage
representation
is
reinforced
by the
architecture
in
front
of
which
the
figures
are
placed
. This
is
a
building
with
three
niches
and a
plain
façade
. Its
roof
is
shown
in the
form
of a
series
of
convexes
decorated
with
finials
.
[…]
The
women
are
dressed
in
similar
manner
in a
sleeved
tunic
and a
mantle
. The
heads
are
veiled
and
feet
are
shod
in
slippers
. The
two
figures
to the
left
are
seated
on a
cushioned
couch
and in
discourse
, the
act
accompanied
by the
gestures
of
hands
which
come
out
of the
clothes
. In
front
of them
is
a
round
table
with
three
legs
which
are in the
form
of a
goat's
legs
. On the
table
is
a
cup
. The
third
figure
to the
right
is
shown
seated
on a
chair
with a
back
. Her
mask
has a
white
wig
. Her
right
arm
is
raised
,
hand
touching
the
face
, and
supported
by the
other
arm
placed
on her
lap
. A
young
servant
who
stands
by her
is
shown
extending
the
latter
a
cup
.
Another
young
servant
is
depicted
to the
left
,
behind
the
couch
,
attending
the
other
two
women
. The
inscription
in
Greek
at the
bottom
reads
'Zosimos
made
it'
.
Although
the
same
name
appears
in
another
mosaic
, that of the
Crowning
of
Aphrodite
,
scholars
have
remarked
the
similarity
of
borders
and
difference
of
style
between
the
emblemata
.
It
has been
speculated
that the
name
Zosimos
may
not have
belonged
to the
mosaicist
but to the
person
who
made
the
color
drawings
on
which
the
mosaics
were
made.
