Description
"In a
border
of
inverted
rows
of
stepped
pyramids
(omitted
in the
picture)
one
of the
most
popular
episodes
of
Greek
mythology
, the
rescue
of
Andromeda
by
Perseus
,
is
represented
.
[…]
To the
right
,
identified
by an
inscription
in
Greek
,
Perseus
is
shown
. He
is
draped
in a
cloak
which
is
fastened
by a
concentric
circular
clasp
near
his
right
shoulder
. The
garment
is
thrown
over
the
other
shoulder
and
leaves
the
rest
of his
muscular
body
naked
. He
wears
a
Phyrgian
cap
. His
left
hand
holds
the
handle
of the
harpe
that
Hermes
had
given
to him to
cut
off
the
head
of the
Gorgon
Medusa
whom
he had
killed
. From the
same
hand
the
severed
head
of
Medusa
hangs
. His
feet
are
shod
in the
winged
sandals
that were also
given
to him by
Hermes
and
which
enabled
him to
fly
.
Perseus
extends
his
right
arm
towards
the
young
girl
opposite
him and
holding
her by the
arm
helps
her to
descend
from the
rock
to
which
she had been
chained
. The
broken
chain
and the
cliff
are
represented
in a
dramatic
manner
. The
Gorgon
Medusa
had
such
an
ugly
face
that those
who
gazed
upon
it
were
petrified
with
fright
and to
prevent
Perseus
from
looking
directly
at her,
only
at her
reflection
,
Athene
[Athena]
had
given
him a
mirror
,
placed
at the
center
of the
composition
.
[…]
Behind
Perseus
and on the
ground
is
the
corpse
of
[a]
giant
sea
serpent
,
which
is
identified
by the
inscription
as
'ketos'
(literally
'sea
monster')
, that he
killed
. Its
body
is
coiled
and
carries
a
horn
protruding
above
the
nose
.
[…]
Andromeda
, also
identified
by an
inscription
,
is
shown
between
the
two
pieces
of
rock
to
which
she had been
chained
. Her
drapery
consists
of a
tunic
and a
mantle
. The
latter
garment
is
gold
colored
and
after
enveloping
her
left
shoulder
and
arm
gathers
around
the
lower
body
. She
wears
a
headdress
and her
naked
arm
is
adorned
with
bracelets
.
Next
to her
feet
[are]
her
water
jar
and a
scallop
shell.
