Description
“The
Erechtheum
seen
from the
west
, as
it
might
have
appeared
at the
beginning
of the
fourth
century
BC
. A
sacrificial
procession
with a
lamb
for the
sacrifice
is
approaching
the
sanctuary
of
Athena
Polias.”
(p.77)
; "
[...]
in
420
BC
the
building
of the
Erechtheum
began
.
[...]
Work
stopped
when
the
war
began
again
, but
recommenced
in
409
BC
and by
405
BC
the
Erechtheum
was at
last
complete.
"
(p.74)
;
“The
result
was a
somewhat
awkward
building
, but
one
not
without
a
certain
harmony
.
It
was a
multiple
temple
,
visually
unified
by
consistent
use
of the
Ionic
style
.
/
In
essence
, the
Erechtheum
consisted
of
two
semi-detached
temples
,
one
facing
east
and the
other
, the
larger
,
facing
north
.
Owing
to the
steep
slope
of the
ground
, the
east-facing
temple
was
over
3
metres
[meters]
(10
feet)
higher
than the
other
.
Each
temple
had a
porch
supported
on
elaborately
decorated
Ionic
columns
. The
entablature
was
decorated
with a
frieze
of
low-relief
figures
in
white
marble
on a
darker
background
of
Eleusinian
stone
. The
frieze
extended
right
round
the
double
temple
like
a
belt
holding
it
together.”
