Description
“A
section
through
the
Propylaea
,
showing
the
northern
half
. The
Pinakotheke
is
on the
left
. The
gateway
was
approached
by a
broad
ramp
which
was
probably
stepped
.
Visitors
passed
through
a
temple-like
entrance
composed
of
six
Doric
columns
.
Inside
the
Propylaea
the
central
passageway
was
flanked
by
Ionic
columns
.
Five
portals
led
to a
back
porch
which
echoed
the
Doric
architecture
of the
front.”

;
“The
Propylaea
was
built
with a
temple-like
façade
of
six
Doric
columns
at
either
end
. The
gateway
was
approached
by a
massive
ramp
a
little
over
20
metres
[meters]
(65
1/2
feet)
wide
. This
ramp
,
which
arose
25
metres
[meters]
(82
feet)
over
its
80-metre
[meter]
(262
1/2-foot)
length
(the
same
incline
as the
steepest
part
of the
Panathenaic
Way)
, was
probably
stepped
,
possibly
with a
3-metre
[meter]
(10-foot)
wide
passageway
up
the
middle
for
sacrificial
animals
. The
two
centre
[center]
columns
had a
wider
spacing
to
allow
for the
passageway
. The
passageway
passed
through
a
short
colonnade
of
Ionic
columns
and
emerged
in a
back
porch
with
six
Doric
columns
. The
architraves
over
the
colonnade
were
reinforced
with
iron
bars
, a
very
early
example
of
metal
reinforcement
in
building
.
Pedestrians
using
the
stepped
ramp
on
either
side
of the
passageway
had to
climb
five
steps
to
pass
through
the
columns
along
the
front
and a
further
five
steps
to
enter
the
rear
porch
. From here the
visitor
would
see
the
great
bronze
statue
of
Athena
,
which
towered
above
the
Propylaea
and
could
be
seen
from
several
miles
out
to
sea
. The
porch
also
offered
the
first
close-up
view
,
albeit
partial
, of the
Parthenon
.
/
Two
wings
of
unequal
size
flanked
the
front
of the
Propylaea
. That to the
north
, the
Pinakotheke
, was a
picture
gallery
and
perhaps
a
ceremonial
dining
room
, with
space
for
seventeen
couches.”
