up
from the
entrance
hall
to the
Via
Labicana.”

building
was on the
north
side

where
a
wide
staircase
led
down
from the
Via
Labicana
. This
gave
onto a
large
rectangular
courtyard
surrounded
by
porticoes
.
Behind
these were
rooms
,
fourteen
on the
longer
sides
and
ten
on the
shorter
. The
building
may
have been
three
storeys
[stories]
high
.

In the
middle
of the
courtyard
was an
amphitheatre
[amphitheater]
in
miniature
,
measuring
63
by
42
metres
[meters]
. There were
entrances
on the
main
east-west
axis
and
four
more
on the
curves
,
two
on
each
side
. The
seating
area
(cavea)
was
very
narrow
,
just
over
6
metres
[meters]
wide
. This was
supported
on a
series
of
vaulted
substructures
.
It
was
big
enough
to
hold
eight
rows
of
seats
,
sufficient
for
no
more
than
3000
spectators
. The
arena
was
surrounded
by a
wall
2
metres
[meters]
high
,
topped
by a
cornice
of
white
marble.”
