Description
Discovered
near
Tivoli
(Italy)
. "
Cut
from a
single
block
of
marble
, this
bust
of
Faustina
the
Younger
is
notable
for its
excellent
state
of
preservation
,
despite
a
few
chips
on the
face
,
some
damage
to the
drapery
, and the
modern
restoration
of
part
of the
chignon
. The
face
has
precisely
captured
fine
features
and a
certain
pensiveness
; a
dreamy
air
is
created
by the
figure's
turning
and
gazing
slightly
to the
right
.
Above
thin
brows
, the
partially
lidded
and
prominent
eyes
were
hollowed
to
form
irises
with
delicate
incisions
; they are
partly
covered
by the
upper
eyelid
. In
profile
, the
figure
has a
slightly
hooked
nose
, with
meticulously
rendered
,
fleshy
lips
and
mouth
. The
center-parted
hair
has
thick
,
wavy
locks
and a
pattern
of
wide
flat
waves
on
either
side
that
extends
to a
thick
chignon
in the
back
of the
head
.
Two
curly
locks
fall
from the
chignon
down
the
neck
. The
princess
wears
a
tunic
under
her
mantle
,
one
end
of
which
drapes
over
the
left
shoulder
in
deep
folds
.

This
bust
is
a
replica
of the
widely
distributed
effigy
of the
princess
