Description	Discovered near Tivoli (Italy). "Cut from a single block of marble, this bust of Faustina the Younger is notable for its excellent state of preservation, despite a few chips on the face, some damage to the drapery, and the modern restoration of part of the chignon. The face has precisely captured fine features and a certain pensiveness; a dreamy air is created by the figure's turning and gazing slightly to the right. Above thin brows, the partially lidded and prominent eyes were hollowed to form irises with delicate incisions; they are partly covered by the upper eyelid. In profile, the figure has a slightly hooked nose, with meticulously rendered, fleshy lips and mouth. The center-parted hair has thick, wavy locks and a pattern of wide flat waves on either side that extends to a thick chignon in the back of the head. Two curly locks fall from the chignon down the neck. The princess wears a tunic under her mantle, one end of which drapes over the left shoulder in deep folds. […] This bust is a replica of the widely distributed effigy of the princess […]." (Excerpt from catalogue entry by Cecile Giroire, p. 123).
