Description
“Moreau
has
rendered
Salome
as an
enchantress
, the
archetypal
femme
fatale
who
seduces
Herod
into
performing
her will.
Moreau
was
very
careful
to
avoid
endowing
the
figure
of
Herod
with any
magisterial
dignity
but
rather
shows
him as an
old
man
, with
grizzled
beard
and
sloping
shoulders
.
Neither
he
nor
the
veiled
executioner
at his
side
dare
to
gaze
directly
upon
Salome
as she
performs
her
dance
cum
invocation
.
Each
watches
surreptitiously
,
through
sidelong
glances
, as if
aware
of the
heinous
crime
they will
commit
.
/
The
sinister
qualities
are
further
emphasized
by the
numerous
symbols
Moreau
has
placed
within
the
composition
.
Salome’s
right
hand
holds
the
lotus
,
symbol
of
sensual
delights
. A
black
panther
, an
incarnation
of
luxury
,
growls
as he
sits
upon
a
blood-red
carpet
strewn
with
dead
flowers
,
signifying
loss
of
innocence
. The
lapis
lazuli
and
gold-encrusted
columns
that
flank
the
scene
are
surmounted
by
golden
sphinxes
,
traditionally
associated
with
voluptuousness
.
Salome’s
mother
,
Herodias
,
holds
a
fan
of
peacock
feathers
,
indicating
her
vanity
and
pride
.
Presiding
over
the
drama
from
atop
Herod’s
throne
is
the
shadowy
figure
of
Diana
of
Ephesus
, the
multibreasted
fertility
goddess
.
Throughout
his
oeuvre
,
Moreau
,
like
so
many
nineteenth-century
artists
,
used
woman
as the
personification
of
evil
,
placing
her in
direct
opposition
to the
beneficent
forces
symbolized
by
man.”
