Description
“[…]
Washington
is
placed
in an
elaborate
setting
equal
to his
importance
. In the
Grand
Manner
tradition
of
portraiture
, his
is
before
a
velvet
drapery
swag
and a
classical
column
,
both
alluding
to his
high
rank
, and
surrounded
by the
attributes
of his
professions
. His
left
arm
holds
a
sword
,
symbolic
of his
former
role
as
defender
of the
country
. But
only
the
sword’s
hilt
is
shown
,
clearly
a
sign
indicating
Washington’s
subsequent
role
as
guardian
of the
peace
.
Washington
is
dressed
as a
civilian
,
rather
than in
military
garb
. He
sits
at a
table
upon
which
are a
book
and a
map
. His
right
hand
seems
to
press
down
on the
map
, a
gesture
further
emphasizing
his
role
as
leader
of the
country.”
