Description
"
Though
its
exact
date
is
unknown
, the
nature
of the
brushwork
and
general
intensity
of
style
suggest
late
1888
or
early
1889
while
van
Gogh
was
still
in
Arles
, the
village
in
Provence
[...]
.
It
may
even
have been
executed
after
van
Gogh
entered
the
hospital
in
nearby
Saint-Remy
in
May
1889
.
[...]
The
composition
is
one
of
triangles
: the
first
, a
foreground
of
lumpy
soil
; the
second
, a
bulge
of
blue-purple
ground
that
surrounds
the
man
sowing
grain
; the
third
, a
dark
field
where
quickly
brushed
images
of
man
and
horse
are
plowing
furrows
suggested
by
thin
swirls
of the
three
primary
colors
. A
village
with
many
black
smokestacks
(perhaps
representing
the
railroad
sheds
or
gas
works
of
Arles)
is
silhouetted
against
a
narrow
band
of
chrome
yellow
sky.”
