; "The
Hall
of the
Colossus
was
deliberately
set
in the
northeast
corner
of the
Forum
, at the
end
of the
large
western
portico
, in the
typical
position
of the
sacelli
closely
linked
to
basilicas
, as in the
provincial
complexes
. But in this
context
the
chamber
was
devoted
to the
cult
of the
emperor
,
though
with a
specific
significance
. The
space
is
characterized
by a
vertical
development
emphasized
by the
relevant
smallness
of its
site
(12
x
13
meters
,
giving
a
total
of
156
square
meters)
. The
side
walls
are
lined
with
white
Lunense
marble
and
faced
with
slabs
of
marble
(giallo
antico)
with
palmettes
and
lotus
flower
moldings
, an
element
of
continuity
uniting
the
side
walls
with the
end
wall
. The
order
running
along
the
walls
consists
of
slender
pilasters
in
pavonazzetto
marble
surmounted
by
capitals
and
entablatures
in
white
marble
, but with
traces
of
polychrome
decoration
painted
in
Egyptian
blue
.
Between
the
pilasters
there
must
have been
paneling
(with
the
largest
panel
in the
center)
,
bounded
above
by
elegant
projecting
cornices
in
white
Lunense
marble
but not
terminating
in
pilasters
.
It
is
believed
that the
panels
contained
the
famous
paintings
,
mentioned
by
Pliny
in his
Naturalis
Historia
as
set
in
fori
sui
celeberrimis
partibus
. The
end
wall
of the
chamber
,
against
which
stood
out
the
Colossus
, was
faced
with
rectangular
slabs
in
white
Lunense
marble
, at
least
to the
height
of the
statue
,
some
eleven
meters
. The
preservation
of
holes
for the
cramps
used
in
installing
the
slabs
and
examination
of their
thicknesses
have
made
it
possible
to
place
the
decorative
vegetable
motifs
in a
sequence
with a
slightly
curvilinear
course
,
suggesting
that a
pattern
of
folds
of
drapery
formed
a
backdrop
to the
colossal
statue
.
[…]
Among
the
decorative
motifs
identified
to
date
, the
most
significant
are:
large
palmettes
alternating
with
smaller
ones
reversed
, with a
wave
scroll
and
predominance
of
red
in the
color
scheme
;
stylized
inverted
palmettes
, a
prevalence
of
red
, with the
pattern
drawn
with a
compass
;
bands
with a
wave
scroll
and
internal
rosettes
; a
large
number
of
slabs
colored
with
Egyptian
blue
;
slabs
perfectly
plain
and
lacking
in
coloring
,
probably
applied
to the
upper
part
of the
wall
; and
finally
, an
interesting
motif
with
squares
containing
rosettes
,
alternating
with
rosettes
alone
,
alluding
to a
pattern
of
coffering
, as if
imitating
an
aedicule
.
[…]
The
painted
wall
was
[…]
intended
to
open
up
the
interior
illusionistically
,
because
it
is
small
compared
with the
majesty
of the
colossal
statue
.
[…]
The
architectural
decoration
of this
chamber
is
enriched
with
another
element
related
to the
cult
of the
genius
Augusti
[…]
. This
is
the
frieze
of
young
maidens
bearing
garlands
laden
with
fruit
. In
various
phases
of
study
of the
complex
,
15
fragments
were
identified
. Their
recomposition
is
commonly
seen
as
related
to a
pattern
of
three
figures
,
two
of them with
mirrored
profiles
facing
to a
central
frontal
,
united
by
festoons
. The
variety
of
fruits
may
refer
to
participation
in
ceremonies
in
honor
of the
Lares
and the
Genius
Augusti
,
which
included
a
procession
of
maidens.
