Description |
Edition of 10. "Sherman poses as a woman daydreaming. She holds a mirror, a clichéd symbol of vanity, in one hand. Momentarily her blank stare triggers a disturbing 'double-take'. She becomes a victim of crime in a police photograph, 'killed' by the voyeuristic, mechanical gaze of the camera." (Caption, p. 201); "The American artist Cindy Sherman, earlier described as 'post-modern', is relevant here. Emerging in New York in the late 1970s with Pop, Conceptualism, and Body Art as her expressive resources, her first important works, a sequence of 69 Untitled Film Stills, were produced between 1977 and 1980. Ideally they should be seen en masse since she appears in all of them, threading her persona through codes of clothing, lighting, setting, and composition filched from 1950s American B-movies. Appearing as a film-star lookalike, a flirtatious college student, a defiant housewife, she tips her hat to feminist debates, establishing femininity as a 'construct' rather than something 'innate."
