Description	"The painting anthologizes Dali's obsessions of the moment." (Caption); "As a result of Santos Torroella's dedicated researches, it is now generally accepted that the two heads in The Birth of Venus represent those of Lorca [Federico García Lorca] (on the shoreline) and Dali (in the foreground). The work displays one of Dali's most alluring female nudes, seen from behind and, as in Honey is Sweeter than Blood, suitably decapitated. Dali, a self-confessed worshipper of the female posterior, always insisted that he loathed large breasts as much as women's genitals, stating his preference, among the body's orifices, for the anus. In The Birth of Venus, Lorca's head is represented, yet again, with the eyes shut. Is he enacting his own death? Dreaming? Or do the closed eyes suggest, perhaps the poet's blissful unconcern at the torment unleashed in Dali's brain by the contemplation of the shapely female buttocks? All we can say is that the painting, as suggested by its second title, Sterile Efforts, seems to be yet another expression of the sexual and emotional conflicts that were then afflicting both friends."
