Description
"The
painting
anthologizes
Dali's
obsessions
of the
moment.
"
(Caption)
; "As a
result
of
Santos
Torroella's
dedicated
researches
,
it
is
now
generally
accepted
that the
two
heads
in The
Birth
of
Venus
represent
those of
Lorca
[Federico
García
Lorca]
(on
the
shoreline)
and
Dali
(in
the
foreground)
. The
work
displays
one
of
Dali's
most
alluring
female
nudes
,
seen
from
behind
and, as in
Honey
is
Sweeter
than
Blood
,
suitably
decapitated
.
Dali
, a
self-confessed
worshipper
of the
female
posterior
,
always
insisted
that he
loathed
large
breasts
as
much
as
women's
genitals
,
stating
his
preference
,
among
the
body's
orifices
, for the
anus
. In The
Birth
of
Venus
,
Lorca's
head
is
represented
,
yet
again
, with the
eyes
shut
.
Is
he
enacting
his
own
death
?
Dreaming
? Or
do
the
closed
eyes
suggest
,
perhaps
the
poet's
blissful
unconcern
at the
torment
unleashed
in
Dali's
brain
by the
contemplation
of the
shapely
female
buttocks
?
All
we
can
say
is
that the
painting
, as
suggested
by its
second
title
,
Sterile
Efforts
,
seems
to be
yet
another
expression
of the
sexual
and
emotional
conflicts
that were then
afflicting
both
friends.
