Each

individualized
to
some
degree
.
Typefaces
vary
, as
do
the
colors
. They are
always
horizontal
in
format

each
one

Much
as
Conceptualists
railed
against

assimilation
, they were
curiously
attracted
to
bureaucratic
language
. The
redundant
aesthetic
formulas
of
Modernism
were
transformed
into a
babble
of
systems
and
statistics
. On
4
January

, for
instance
, the
Japanese-born
On
Kawara
started
to
produce
'date
paintings'
on an
almost
daily
basis
. As
tokens
of his
continuing
existence
they
took
the
day's
date
as their
subject-matter
. He also
produced
a
ten-volume
book
which
listed
one
million
years
counting
back
from
1971
, the
year
it
was
produced.
