Description
Installation
:
used
sump
oil
,
steel
; "The
oil
uncannily
mirrors
the
ceiling
of the
gallery
,
leaving
the
spectator
,
figuratively
speaking
, in
mid-air
.
Although
currently
installed
in the
Saatchi
Gallery
, the
work
was
originally
located
in
Matt's
Gallery
in
East
London
. In that
venue
spectators
had been
able
to
view
urban
wasteland
from the
gallery's
windows
. The
work's
aura
consequently
seemed
linked
to the
decline
of
manufacturing
industries
. This was
lost
in its
later
setting
,
where
the
effect
was
more
streamlined
and
'theatrical'
.

London's

walks
along
a
kind
of
enclosed
jetty
surrounded
, at
waist
height
, by an
immense
steel
trough
containing
an
expanse
of
impenetrable
,
glutinous
sump
oil
. The
effect
is
profoundly
disorienting.
