Discovered
in
Pompeii
. "With its
fluted
shaft
and
slightly
flared
bottom
, the
candelabrum
rests
on a
tripod
shaped
like
lion's
paws
,
partially
covered
by a
double
plant-motif
sheath
.
Three
palmettes
,
one
broken
,
ornament
the
space
between
the
lion's
paws
.
Each
palmette
has
nine
petals
,
surmounted
with an
openwork
volute
decoration
. The
tripod
ends
in a
ring
in the
shape
of a
plant
calyx
into
which
the
shaft
is
fitted
. The
upper
end
of the
shaft
is
topped
with a
small
chalice
covered
with a
lantern-holder
pan
. The
flared
neck
of the
chalice
is
inlaid
with
tin
in the
form
of
heart-shaped
ivy
foliage
and
three-seeded
berries
. The
pan
,
marked
with
concentric
circles
,
is
ornamented
with an
ovum
frieze
around
the
edge
.

pyriform
tank
of this
lamp
rests
on a
low
foot
. The
pan
,
surrounded
by a
flat
border
,
extends
to the
half-moon
shaped
spout
. At the
center
of the
disk
is
an
opening
in the
shape
of a
water
drop
, into
which
oil
was
poured
. The
handle
,
which
curves
forward
,
is
ornamented
with a
swan's
head
emerging
from a
floral
calyx
. The
bird's
eyes
and
plumage
are
finely
engraved
, and its
closed
beak
bends
over
the
opening.
