Dialogue

,
whose
much
later
title
,
Unsatisfied
Desires
,
clarifies
its
theme
. The
hand
on the
left
, with its
rampantly
phallic
finger
,
is
that of
Dali
the
compulsive
masturbator
, and had been
adumbrated
a
year
earlier
in
Little
Ashes
. But
it
is
also the
male
sexual
apparatus
itself
: the
first
finger
representing
an
erect
penis
,
testicles
the
third
and
fourth
. As for the
red-edged
,
hairy
black
orifice
located
between
the
thumb
and
first
finger
,
it
inescapably
suggests
a
vagina
. The
phallic
finger
points
in the
direction
of the
other
party
to the
dialogue
,
clearly
female
, from
which
the
hand
is
separated
by an
anodyne
grey
space
, as if the
figures
were
located
on
islands
and
attempting
to
communicate
, in
vain
,
over
an
insurmountable
expanse
of
sea
. The
red
,
ribbon-like
form
at the
female's
orifice
echoes
the
one
juxtaposed
with a
thumb
at the
pinnacle
of the
wraith-like
,
Tanguyesque
shape
spiraling
against
the
sky
,
which
Santos
Torroella
interprets
as
representing
the
unsatisfied
desires
of the
picture's
second
title
;
both
draw
the
eye
back
to the
space
,
picked
out
in the
same
red
, at the
centre
of the
masturbatory
hand
.
Dialogue
on the
Beach
,
which
shows
the
formal
influence
of
Miró
,
can
be
read
as the
expression
of
Dali's
despair
at the
sexual
loneliness
to
which
his
inability
to
find
a
partner
was
driving
him, and for
which
shame-ridden
masturbation
was the
only
outlet.
