Description
"
Perhaps
Dali's
most
honest
appraisal
of his
Muse.
"
(Caption)
; "
[Dali]
told
his
family
about
the
portrait
of
Gala
on
which
he had been
working
every
day
for
six
months
.
It
was
painted
'like
a
Vermeer'
, and
everyone
who
saw
it
was
'deeply
moved'
.
Dali
said
later
that
Galarina
had
taken
him
540
hours
to
complete
, and that the
title
was
indebted
to
Raphael's
La
Fornarina
. The
painting
,
today
in
Dali's
Theatre-Museum
in
Figueres
,
is
certainly
remarkable
.
It
shows
the
Muse
at her
most
willful
,
domineering
. Also, with her
defiantly
exposed
left
breast
, at her
most
brazenly
physical
.
Looking
back
in
1956
over
the
twelve
years
in
which
he had
known
her,
Reynolds
Morse
wrote
that he had
never
once
seen
Gala
relax
.
Greedy
,
demanding
,
critical
, she was
'part
tiger
,
part
martyr
,
part
mother
,
part
mistress
and
part
banker
, a
curious
and
inaccessible
mixture'
, and
so
'single-purposed'
in the
pursuit
of her and
Dali's
interests
that she had
no
real
friends
of her
own
. The
picture
tells
it
all.
