finest

most
refreshingly
original

paintings
Dali
was to
execute
during
his
eight-year
sojourn
in the
United
States
.
Three
years
later
he
reproduced
it
in
color
in
50
Secrets
of
Magic
Craftsmanship
,
which
suggests
that for him
it
represented
one
of the
purest
expressions
of the
new
classicism
he was
now
propounding
(symbolized
by the
Greek
head
affixed
to the
wall
,
reminiscent
of the
emblem
of the
Residencia
de
Estudiantes)
. The
deep
perspective
of the
painting
,
however
,
is
in
Dali's
best
Surrealist
manner
,
while
both
the
design
and
coloring
of the
pavilion
into
which
Gala's
body
is
transformed
owe
an
unacknowledged
debt
to the
fantastic
pink
constructions
invented
by
Hieronymous
Bosch
in The
Garden
of
Earthly
Delights
,
which
Dali
and
Lorca
had
admired
together
in the
Prado.
