Description
"
One
of the
ironies
of the
anti-market
strategies
of
certain
Land
Artists
was that to
view
their
works
other
than
via
photographs
spectators
had to
travel
large
distances
. This
could
be
costly
,
especially
when
specialized
transport
was
required
.
Spectators
of
Lightning
Field
could
observe
the
work
from a
log
cabin
located
in
suitable
viewing
range
. But
even
then, of
course
, the
work
could
not
necessarily
be
guaranteed
to
'perform'
.
(Caption

p.175)
"The
American
Walter
De
Maria
demonstrated
what
could
be
done
[in
terms
of
Land
Art]
with his
Lightning
Field
of
1971-7
in
which
400
stainless-steel
poles
were
planted
in an
area
of
approximately
one
square
mile
near
Quemado
,
New
Mexico
, a
location
noted
for its
high
incidence
of
electric
storms
.
De
Maria
thus
coaxed
these
forces
into
'completing'
his
work.
