Description
"In this
painting
Haacke's
use
of
allegorical
detail
has an
ironic
air
of
academic
exactitude
. For
instance
, the
marble
sculpture
of
Pandora
,
pointedly
placed
on the
Victorian
table
next
to
Margaret
Thatcher
,
is
based
on
one
produced
in
1890
by the
British
sculptor
Harry
Bates
and
owned
by the
Tate
Gallery
,
London.
"
(Caption

; "In
1983
Hans
Haacke
,
previously
discussed
here
[in
Hopkins]
in the
context
of
Conceptualism
,
paradoxically
turned
his
hand
to
oil
painting
. In
Taking
Stock
(Unfinished)
he
surrounded
an
image
of
Margaret
Thatcher
,
one
of the
political
enablers
of the
current
art
boom
, with a
décor
connotative
of her
regard
for
'Victorian
values'
,
framing
the
painting
in
appropriately
grand
style
.
Behind
Thatcher
the
artist
depicted
a
bookcase
containing
leather-bound
volumes
. These are
shown
to
contain
details
of
company
reports
,
including
those of the
Saatchis
. The
heads
of the
brothers
[Charles
and
Maurice]
are
further
emblazoned
on
two
cracked
plates
on the
top
shelf
of the
bookcase
,
signifying
their
links
with
Julian
Schnabel
. The
Saatchis'
agency
had
advised
both
the
British
Conservative
Party
and
Thatcher
on
matters
of
public
image
before
their
election
victories
in
Britain
in
1979
and
1983
.
Haacke
thus
supplied
the
'evidence'
confirming
the
new
painting's
complicity
with
political
and
economic
interests.
