Description	"As an African-American who is able to pass as 'white', Piper has written eloquently of the social and institutional prejudices that surface when she divulges her racially mixed identity. In a text entitled 'Flying' of 1987 she wrote: 'I am the racist's nightmare … I represent the loathsome possibility that everyone is "tainted" by black ancestry. If someone can look like me and sound like me who is unimpeachably white?' (quoted in Adrian Piper, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, 1991, p.26)." (Caption, p.189); "Adrian Piper, an African-American artist, addressed interpersonal social assumptions from a different angle, dressing up as a man in her Mythic Being performances of 1975 in order to explore, in the course of walking New York's streets, how black males were themselves made into objects of racism. The distortions of self-image brought on through racial stereotyping were pointedly expressed in a self-portrait by Piper of 1981." (Excerpt, p.189)
