Description
"The viewer of Lorna Simpson's works is compelled to shuttle between texts and images in order to construct meanings . The use of text-image conjunctions was a major component of 1980s photographic process . In Britain Victor Burgin's teaching at the Polytechnic of Central London was particularly influential for a number of Simpson's contemporaries . These included Mitra Tabrizian , Karen Knorr , and Olivier Richon. " (Caption , p.222) ; "[…] Lorna Simpson , an African-American artist who employed text-image juxtapositions in a Conceptualist idiom , produced a haunting series of back views of a generic black female in a shift , her identity occluded . Clearly social invisibility was being figured here, whilst Simpson's textual captions produced ambiguous supplementary meanings. " (Excerpt , p.223)
