Description
Portrait
head
. "This
portrait
has
fundamental
importance
in the
study
of
Augustan
iconography
.
Both
it
and a
very
similar
portrait
in the
Forbes
collection
are
considered
excellent
examples
of the
Louvre
type
of
Augustan
portrait
.
[...]
This
portrait
type
is
distinguished
by a
hairstyle
with a
distinctive
'fork'
in the
locks
of
hair
over
the
left
eye
and a
'pincer'
on the
far
right
over
the
right
eye
, with
four
waving
locks
in
between
,
combed
to the
right
. The
wave
over
the
nose
is
particularly
prominent
. In
contrast
to the
other
portrait
types
,
where
Augustus
is
depicted
as
eternally
youthful
, the
Louvre
type
is
striking
in its
depiction
of
advanced
age
. The
head
is
also
slightly
downcast
to the
right
, and the
almost
imperceptibly
downward
curve
of the
lips
suggests
a
sense
of
disillusionment.
