Description	"This large, back-lit photographic transparency apparently shows soldiers killed in mid-action. The scene was actually mocked up by digitally manipulating images. In a tableau worthy of a ghoulish horror film, a young Moslem (center left) searches a Russian soldier's possessions. He possibly emblematizes the Islamic Fundamentalism which the Russians were then attempting to counter in Afghanistan." (Caption, p.236); "The Canadian artist Jeff Wall has been a central influence on recent European and American practice. In 1991-2 he produced a work entitled Dead Troops Talk. Responding to a 1980s concern with the rehabilitation of 'history painting' it allegorized not only the decline of the Soviet Union, whose unsuccessful involvement in Afghanistan echoed America's failed intervention in Vietnam, but also Europe's growing susceptibility to religious or atavistic tendencies. Whilst the Cold War opposition between capitalism and Communism had previously set the terms for post-1945 Europe, Russia's decline heralded the emergence of new historical forces." (Excerpt, p.233)
