Description
"
Europe's
great
master
of
Environmental
Art
is
, of
course
,
Christo
,
who
continues
to
work
triumphantly
with a
significance
equal
to the
ever-greater
ambition
and
scale
of his
projects
. For the
recent
Surrounded
Islands
,
Christo
spent
over
$3
million
(generated
by the
sale
of his
masterful
preparatory
drawings)
and
engaged
the
services
of
two
attorneys
,
one
marine
biologist
,
two
ornithologists
, a
marine
mammal
expert
, a
marine
engineer
,
four
other
engineers
, a
building
contractor
, and
over
400
untitled
workers
(including
a
Cuban
woman
who
normally
labors
in a
factory
sewing
cargo
slips
and
pool
covers)
to
surround
eleven
small
islands
in
Miami's
Biscayne
Bay
with
6
million
square
feet
of
glistening
,
flamingo-pink
polypropylene
fabric
.
Like
all
of
Christo's
works
, this
one
,
when
completed
, had
only
a
brief
existence
in
time
and
space
, but,
thanks
to
massive
documentation
,
it
resides
more
permanently
in the
memory
. And,
despite
the
fears
of
environmentalists
,
nature
survived
its
encounter
with
art
unscathed
.
Meanwhile
, those
who
saw
the
wrapped
islets
,
like
enormous
water
lilies
floating
under
a
cloudless
sky
,
witnessed
, in the
words
of the
critic
Manuela
Hoelterhoff
,
'an
almost
magical
transformation
of a
small
piece
of this
world
.
Surrounded
Islands
is
one
of the
artist's
most
poetical
projects
. On a
watery
canvas
,
Christo
has
painted
blossoms
more
epic
than any
ever
imagined
by
Monet.'
