Description
From
Kerameikos
,
[Athens
,
Greece]
. "
Comparison
of the
head
of the
kouros
from the
Sacred
Gate
with the
Dipylon
Head
leaves
virtually
no
doubt
that they were
created
by the
same
sculptor
about
600
BC
. He was the
first
Athenian
marble-carver
of
consequence
and the
founder
of a
tradition
that was to
culminate
150
years
later
in the
marble
sculptures
of the
Parthenon
. His
name
remains
unknown
, and
archaeologists
have
therefore
baptized
him the
Dipylon
Artist
. The
kouros
of the
Sacred
Gate
gives
us an
idea
of the
way
in
which
this
leading
Athenian
sculptor
rendered
the
male
body
in
ideal
nudity.
