Central
figure

west
pediment
. "The
discovery
of the
pedimental
sculptures
of the
temple
of
Zeus
in
1876/77
was
one
of the
greatest
moments
of the
excavation
. They were
found
in
specific
positions
in
front
of
both
ends
of the
temple
, a
circumstance
that was of
great
assistance
in
restoring
the
two
majestic
compositions
on the
pediments
of the
temple
. These
date
from
about
450-456
BC
and are
characteristic
examples
of the
Severe
Style
of
ancient
Greek
sculpture
.
