Description
"Ridden by the young Jockey , the restored horse is in full gallop . […] It is an original statue group dating from about 140 BC. " (Captions , pp . 352-353) ; "Found in the sea off Cape Artemision , Euboea , and retrieved in pieces in 1928 and 1937 . Inv . No . X15177 . Many parts of the horse's body and the whole of its tail are restored . The horse , a courser , is shown galloping swiftly , with only its hind legs on the ground and the forelegs rearing in the air . The rendering of the movement and anatomy of the animal is realistic . The small jockey , a Negro , as is evident from his facial features , leans forward , his body parallel with the back and neck of the horse and his head turned to his left . He wears sandals and a chiton that billows behind him. His hair is tousled , and the contractions and furrows in his face , especially on the forehead , reveal his intense passion and concentration.
