Description
Bronze equestrian statue of the emperor . "The great Roman emperor is depicted on horseback , but the horse and the entire lower part of the body are missing . The statue is a bronze of a very high quality that was probably made in one of the great Greek workshops , which continued to produce in Roman times. " (Excerpt by Harry E . Tzalas , p . 358) ; "The equestrian statue of Augustus is a fine work of the late 1st century BC . The location of the wrecked ship that transported this statue is unknown , but it is hoped that the day may come when the lower part of the body as well as the horse will be found somewhere in the central Aegean. " (Caption , p . 358) ; "Found in the sea between Ayios Evstratios and Euboea in 1979 . Inv . No . X 23322 . Preserved from the waist up . The emperor was depicted on horseback . He wears a tunica and a paludamentum clasped on his right shoulder and wound around his left arm , from where it spreads out , billowing slightly , to his left . The hem of the paludamentum is adorned with a meander pattern and fringed . At his left side can be seen his sword . He held the reins of the horse with his left hand and raises his right in a gesture of blessing or speech (adlocutio gestus) . It is evident from the facial features that Augustus (31 BC-AD 14) is here depicted in middle age. " (Entry from Kaltsas,p . 318)
