Description	"Although one could read this image in the general context of wartime militarism, elements in the painting did have personal significance for Hartley; in particular, it includes references to his friend, Lieutenant Karl von Freyberg, with whom he had maintained an intimate relationship and who was killed in battle a few months before Hartley painted this work. Von Freyberg's initials appear in the lower left corner; his age when he died, 24, appears in the lower right corner; and his regiment number, 4, appears in the center of the painting. Also incorporated is the letter E for von Freyberg's regiment, the Bavarian Eisenbahn." (Excerpt, Kleiner, p. 989)
