Among
commercial
enterprises
of these
types
[shops
,
taverns
and
cafes]
, the
most
common
in
Pompeii
were the
thermopolia
,
cafes
specializing
in the
sale
of
foods
and
hot
beverages
,
especially
wine
. In the
summer
one
could
also
certainly
find
cold
drinks
there,
among
them
wine
diluted
with
cold
water
. The
main
characteristic
of these
cafes
was a
stone
counter
,
almost
always
L-shaped
and
fitted
with
brightly-colored
marble
frames
into
which
were
inserted
large
terra-cotta
jars
containing
the
various
foodstuffs
for
sale.
