Description
"In a
niche
at the
back
of the
peristyle
in the
refined
Pompeii
domus
that
takes
its
name
from this
fresco
, this
portrait
of the
Athenian
comedian
Menander
(end
of the
fourth
century
B.C.)
was
painted
during
the
late
Julio-Claudian
era
. The
Greek
playwright
sits
in a
meditative
pose
with his
hand
on a
scroll
. The
painting
attests
to the
lasting
interest
that the
Romans
of the
early
Imperial
era
had in
Greek
theater
,
which
was
already
a
source
of
inspiration
during
the
time
of the
Republic
for
Latin
authors
such
as
Plautus
and
Terence.
