Born Margaret Finlayson in Canada in 1859, she took her mother's maiden name as her stage name. Mather starred opposite Otis Skinner in performances of "Joan of Arc"; "Romeo and Juliet"; "The Lady of Lyons"; "Leah, the Forsaken"; and "As You Like It" at Macauley's Theatre in March 1891.
