Master plan runs afoul of KIPDA By Gary Mills; The U of L Board of Trustees, in its regular monthly meeting Monday, passed a resolution to support an extension of Eastern Parkway to the south of campus. A committee of the KentuckyIndiana Planning and Development Agency (KIPDA) had n~commended that Eastern Parkway be extended from Third Street to Algonquin Parkway. The university wants Eastern Parkway extended along a southern route which would connect it with Winkler Ave. KIPDA's proposal would leave Eastern Parkway in the middle of campus. This would disrupt the university's masterplan which calls for Eastern Parkway to become part of a university loop. The loop would be closed to non-university traffic. Board member and Student Government Association president Stephen Phelps complained about the lack of consideration the university was getting from the city about the dangers for U of L students crossing Eastern Parkway. significance that the rapid growth of the university has had and will have on the community.'' Miller said the traffic congestion on Eastern Parkway was not going to improve. "The projections made by KIPDA indicates the traffic at that intersection will double by 1990," said Miller. Trustee Skip Grafton said, "If the city of Louisville's political leadership doesn't want us here and the community doesn't want us here, it is beautiful out at ·Shelby Campus." Armed struggle is the only way." The press conference was in the lincoln Room of the Student center at U of L. The officiating members were students from Jefferson Community College. The officers of the ISA did not speak. The two speakers said their names were Mobaraz and Shaida. No other names were given. AU of L student, Don Grady, was present to tell about the "good relations between Iranians and Americans on this campus." The conference was called to discuss: "The recent article~ and news items charging Iranian students at JCC and U of L with cheating and causing problems. The goals of the ISA and the current situation in Iran , including the recent arrest and execution of Iranian patriots. Plans of the ISA to protest these arrests." The conference began after a brief argument over the presence of a photographer. The ISA members said, "We do not want to be photographed because we are afraid of repraisals by the Shah." The conference opened with a reading of greivances and intent. Shaida said, "The ISA will go on a march tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 19) and sponsor a worldwide hunger strike. We d~mand the release of the names of all 18 of the recently arrested Iranian patriots. We also (continued on paae l) Dr. James G. Miller, U of L president, said that KIPDA's proposal does not ''take into consideration the W0odford Porter, chairman of the Board of Trustees, said, ''The mayor stamped it (the masterplan) okay and the county judge stamped it okay and Frankfort stamped it okay but everytime we have tried to implement the plan everyone with five votes has run and slammed the door in our face.''
