After several empty threats last year from the Ku Klux Klan, they have once again planned a campus visit for today from 2- 4 p.m. at the free speech area located outside the Student Activities Center. The white supremacist group has requested to hand out informational fliers to students passing by. University of Louisville Provost Shirley Willihnganz said the university ~eceived the written request from the KKK last Wednesday that stated two representatives of the group wished to pass out informational fliers on campus. Willihnganz said although the university strongly disagrees with their purpose, the KKK filled out the necessary requests fo~ a campus visit. However, she said past experience has shown that the KKK has made several empty claims, saying see KKK, page 3 By MALLORY BOWMAN Editor in Chief On the morning of Aug. 28 between 5 a.m. and 5:33 a.J;TI., three male subjects unlawfully.entered an unlocked third floor apartment at Bettie Johnson Hall, where a female was assaulted. ':We're not sure what the subjects .were doing, but it appears they were just checking for unlocked doors," said Wayne Hall, University ofLouisville director of public safety. Two of the subjects entered the apartment where three females were sleeping. Hall said that the victim, whose name and information has not been released, is not a U ofL student and was only visiting with friends. Hall also said that the victim awoke when the subjects entered and was assaulted but suffered no physical injuries. At that time, another subject was eating and drinking foo~ from the COJ.lnter, and the third subject is believed to have stayed outside to serve as a "lookout," Hall said. The two occupants, U of L sophomore Nicole Volz and another female who wished not to comment, were asleep in their rooms while the subjects were in the room, Hall said. Volz said she and her roommate did not wake up until the suspects · had left and their visitor awakened them. "We were asleep,"Volz said. "She [the victim] woke us up and I went down to the front desk of Bettie Johns~n to talk to security first, then we all went to DPS at the same time." Hall said that how the suspects entered the building is still under . investigation; however, Volz said that she doesn't feel like Bettie Johnson security handled the situation properly. "U of L DPS was great," Volz said. "They were on top of our case. They ' all came. in when they were off duty. "But Bettie Johnson didn't s~em like they were on top of the situation at all. I don't feel like security was doing their job." U of L DPS is not in charge of security for Bettie Johnson because the building is owned and operated by Allen and O'Hara Education Services, LLC. Volz questioned how the suspects had entered the building, because all residents must have a key card to .enter. "The. security guard can't' watch the cameras.~ see ASSAULT, page 2 College of Arts and Sciences gets facelift News By EUGENE VILENSKY News Editor The College of Arts and Sciences is in the middle of a reorganization effort that, in the face of less-than-stellar student retention and graduation rates, is being reorganized from within. Part of the change will involve college advising, which is adding five staff members and is being INDEX split into an upper and lower division. One half will focus on retention, making sure freshmen and sophomores stick around, while the other will focus on making sure juniors and seniors receive their degrees in a timely fashion.
