Description | ROB'T. E. LEE (Way #4778), a side-wheel packet with wood hull (315 ft. x 48.5 ft. x 10.5 ft. (305,48,10?)), was built at Howard in 1876. Owned by Capt. John W. Cannon, ROB'T. E. LEE (Way #4778) operated on the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Vicksburg, Mississippi. This vessel was the second ROB'T. E. LEE and not the famed racer (Way #4777). She made 43 round trips and delivered a total of 124,084 cotton bales to New Orleans in 1878 and served as the Royal Yacht of Mardi Gras in 1878, 1879 and 1880. ROB'T. E. LEE (Way #4778) burned near the Yucatan Plantation in Mississippi on September 30, 1882. Thirty lives were lost. |
