Description |
SPREAD EAGLE in the Ohio River, after being launched at Howard Shipyard. Tugboat FULTON is en route to catch her. SPREAD EAGLE, a side-wheel packet with wood hull (225 ft. x 35 ft. x 6 ft.), was built at Howard in 1892. Owned by Eagle Packet Company in St. Louis, SPREAD EAGLE operated in the St Louis-Alton-Grafton area on the Mississippi River. Originally built as the CITY OF NEW ALBANY (Way #1111) for Louisville-Evansville trade routes, she was sold to T.J. Moss Tie Company in 1893, renamed NEW IDLEWILD (Way #4170), and moved to St. Louis. Her name was changed to SPREAD EAGLE when Eagle Packet Company bought her in 1897. In 1910, she was renamed CAPE GIRARDEAU (Way # 0828) to replace an earlier boat with the same name (Way #0827). She sank in a storm on October 21, 1916. |
