Description |
BIG KANAWHA, on the Ohio River near Howard Shipyard in Port Fulton (now Jeffersonville), Indiana. A stern wheel packet with a wood hull (152 ft. x 30 ft. x 4.5 ft.), BIG KANAWHA was built at Madison, Indiana in 1887. Owned by Captain Marlin Brown, she initially operated on the upper Ohio and Kanawha Rivers, running the Pomeroy-Gallipolis-Charleston Coal Valley trade. After being sold to the White Collar Line, she ran on the Ohio River between Louisville and Madison. White Collar Line swapped BIG KANAWHA to Captain Sam Parsons in exchange for the HELEN M. GOULD (Way #2573), and she was list in ice at Maysville, Kentucky while on her first run for Captain Parsons in 1906. |
