Description
Jean Thomas holds and examines a sculpture of an oarsman . She is standing outside her 'Wee House in the Wood ' in Ashland , Kentucky , wearing a polka dot dress and pearls . On her arm is an African briefcase with an inlaid pattern . The briefcase had been a gift from former employer Leonard J . Schwartz , for whom Thomas did stenographic work in New York before he became Trade Commissioner to the Gold Coast of Africa . In her semi-autobiographical book 'The Sun Shines Bright ' (New York : Prentice-Hall , 1940) , Thomas describes the bag as 'a unique hand-tooled brief case of rich crimson leather , interlaced with strips of white and black kid... ' (p . 157) .
