Description
A boy wearing a hospital gown sits on an iron hospital bed typing on a typewriter . A nurse , holding a glass , watches him. The boy is probably Lora Thacker of Raccoon Hollow [Harlan County] , Kentucky , who had been unable to stand upright until he was taken by Dr . Arthur Shade Jones , eastern head of the Kentucky Crippled Children Commission , to Stephenson orthopedic hospital in Ashland , Kentucky . Jean Thomas took an interest in him, and in Dr . Jones ' work , because Lora was known for his ballad singing . While at the hospital , Lora learned to read and write and edited a newspaper , The Hope Messenger . Title supplied by cataloger .
