Description
Address : 610 S . Fourth Street (Later known as the Francis Building) . Completed in 1907 , the Atherton Building would have been a project started while Alfred S . Joseph was still serving as chief architect and engineer for the firm of McDonald & Dodd . The building is an example of the major influence that Joseph & Joseph was to have on the character of what became "downtown " Louisville as it changed from an area of small shops and residences to one dominated by retail and office spaces . The building contained the Mary Anderson Theater , the first of many designed by the Josephs . This photograph shows the building with canopied windows on the first level and numerous signs lettered just above , including : Geo . W . Owens , Rodgers & Krull , Southern Optical Co . Stamped on front : Caufield & Shook / Louisville . Handwritten on back : Atherton Bldg . / 4th & Chestnut SW corner .
