Description
Henry Lane Stone was born in Bath County , Kentucky , near Sharpsburg , in 1842 . After his father moved the family to Indiana , he attended the Indiana common schools and was also a student in an academy in Bainbridge , Indiana . After a period as a teacher , he read law and briefly attended law school in Indianapolis before being admitted to the Indiana bar in 1862 . He soon entered the Confederate army , joining the Ninth Kentucky Cavalry , commanded by General John Hunt Morgan . He was part of Morgans famous raid through Indiana and Ohio , but was later captured by Union forces . In 1863 , he escaped to Canada where he remained until the end of the war . After a brief time as a merchant , Stone returned to the practice of law in Owingsville , Kentucky , and in 1866 he was elected as a Democrat to the office of county attorney of Bath County . In 1873 , he was elected on the Democratic ticket to represent Bath in the state legislature . Stone moved to Louisville in 1885 and in 1896 , he was elected city attorney of Louisville . Stones Civil War memoir , "Morgan's Men : A Narrative of Personal Experiences " was published in 1919 . He died in 1922 and was buried in the Lexington (Kentucky) Cemetery .
