School of Law
Senior Bulletin 1994-1995
Published by the University of Louisville School of Law
A Message from the Dean
In this year's "Senior Bulletin" you will find a remarkable
group of men and women. They have come to us with highly
competitive academic qualifications. Indeed, the University of
Louisville School of Law now receives about eight applications
for every position in a class. Graduates of our law school have
achieved bar passage rates above the Kentucky statewide
average and job placement rates above the national average.
But statistics do not tell the whole story. These men and
women also have impressed the faculty with their willingness
to work hard. As many of you know, our law school has
resisted the trend toward grade inflation that emerged during
the 1970s and 1980s. There is no such thing as an "easy B" or
"show-up C" at Louisville.
By the time they receive their degrees, each of these seniors
will have participated in our mandatory public service
program-the only such program in Kentucky and one of the
first in the United States. This program enhances the image
of the legal profession and gives our students a real-world
perspective on the practice of law. The program nurtures the
professional skills and values that tomorrow's lawyers must
possess.
Here then, are men and women of quality-ready to serve
you, your clients and the legal profession. I hope you will give
them that opportunity.
Donald L. Burnett, Jr.
Dean
-Office of Career Services
The University of Louisville School of Law
Office of Career Services serves as a liaison
between employers and job applicants. The
office provides a clearinghouse service where
inquiries from employers are made available
to all interested students and graduates.
When an employer lists a job opening with
the Law School, the Office of Career Services
requests information on the title of the
position, a description of duties, salary
range, date position is open, minimum
requirements of applicants and procedures
for applying. In addition, to stimulate
interest as well as to attract those most
qualified, we ask employers to submit a firm
resume, practice profile or similar
descriptive information for display to our
students.
The University is an equal opportunity
employer. We are committed to a policy to
provide our students and alumni with equal
opportunity to obtain employment without
discrimination on the basis of race, color,
religion, national origin, sex, age, handicap,
disability, or sexual orientation. Career
Services facilities and resources are
available only to persons who adhere to this
principle. The law school has adopted the
principles and standards of the National
Association for Law Placement and the
Association of American Law Schools.
Career Services
The Office of Career Services can compile
and mail resumes of students and alumni,
provide a list of available candidates, and
coordinate on-campus interviews. We will
attempt in every way to facilitate an
employer's recruitment process; however, we
will not screen applicants nor attempt to
influence hiring decisions.
On-Campus Interviews
On-Campus interviews are generally held
in the fall; however, they can be scheduled at
any time during the school year with the
exception of vacation and examination
periods. First year students may interview
in the spring for summer positions.
Regional Recruiting Conferences
The University of Louisville participates
in several regional job fairs. The 1994
Southeastern Minority Job Fair was held in
Atlanta, Georgia. The Southeastern Public
4
Interest Job Fair meets in Atlanta during
November. The Mid-South Law Placement
Consortium which is made up of nine
southeastern schools will have its eighth
annual spring recruiting conference in
Nashville, Tennessee in February 1995. For
the fourth time, the three law schools in
Kentucky will co-sponsor the All-Kentucky
Job Fair at the University of Louisville in
the fall of 1995. More information and
registration can be obtained by contacting
the Office of Career Services.
Recruiting Through Correspondence
Employers who are unable to interview at
the School are invited to call or send
announcements of available positions.
Employers can request that a notice be
posted in the Career Services Resource
Library. Employers can elect to have
resumes sent directly by the applicants or
collected and forwarded by the Office of
Career Services.
Alumni Placement
The Office of Career Services has on file
names of University of Louisville Law School
Alumni who are presently interested in
changing professional affiliation. Resumes
from the Active File can be forwarded to
employers upon request. The Office of
Career Services also notifies recent
graduates and other alumni of current job
openings through the "Going Places"
newsletter which is distributed monthly.
Employers have found the newsletter useful
in meeting their immediate needs.
Follow Up
The Office of Career Services requests
that employers notify each student of their
decision regarding application, and that the
Office of Career Services be notified when
hiring has been completed.

inquiries, please contact:

-The University of Louisville School of Law
Background
The study of law began in Louisville in
1846 when the state legislature chartered
the University of Louisville. The former
Jefferson School of Law was absorbed by the
Univerity of Louisville in 1950. Throughout
its 14 7 year history the students, faculty and
alumni of the School of Law have maintained
a traditionally prominent role in scholarship
and leadership within the legal community.
The University of Louisville School of Law
further distinguishes itself by being among
the first law schools in the country to adopt
a mandatory pro bono program. The
University of Louisville School of Law is
accredited by the Association of American
law Schools, the American Bar Association,
and is a member of the National Association
for Law Placement.
Enrollment
There is currently a total enrollment of
approximately 500 students; 375 in the day
and 125 in the evening division. The
selectivity of our admissions standards and
the demanding requirements for graduation
combine to ensure competence in our
graduates.
Facilities
The School of Law has been in its present
location on the Belknap Campus of the
University of Louisville since 1939 when it
moved from its downtown site. Buried
beneath the front portico of this building are
the remains of Louis Dembitz Brandeis,
Associate Justice of the United States
Supreme Court from 1916 to 1939 and his
wife. The original law building designed by
architect Jens Frederick Larson was
supplemented by the construction of a major
library addition in 197 4 and another
addition in 1981. The library of the Law
School consists of more than 240,000
volumes and equivalents which are selected
to aid student instruction and to promote
research. Nineteen-hundred and eighty-one
saw the completion of an expansive
classroom and office facility for the School of
Law, which approximately doubled the
physical plant of the law school. This new
facility was complemented by a complete
renovation and refurbishment of the existing
5
structure. The Law School campus includes
classrooms, seminar halls, a courtroom,
administrative offices, a suite of offices for
student organizations, student and faculty
lounges, a darkroom and a library that can
accommodate over 300 students.
Grading System
The University of Louisville Law School
has maintained rigorous academic
standards. These standards are reflected in
the grading policy of the school. There has
been very little grade inflation.
Because of the high grading standards at
the University of Louisville, the grade point
average of our students may appear lower
than students with less academic
achievement at other schools. Prospective
employers may, therefore, find it particularly
helpful to compare class rank standing of
students.

-Student Publications and Programs
Journal of Family Law
The Journal of Family Law is the law
review of the University of Louisville School
of Law. The Journal consists of student
written case notes and recent case
summaries, and articles by outside authors
with expertise in family law. The Journal
publishes an annual International Survey
issue in conjunction with the International
Society on Family Law. The members of
the Journal publish four issues each year
and have complete editorial control over
content.
Selection is based upon scholastic
achievement and superior writing ability.
Members must write one case note, several
"recent cases" and one student note, as well
as perform tasks such as proofreading and
cite-checking. The editorial board selects
its successors from those members who
have demonstrated responsibility and a
desire for an editorial position. Journal
membership is one of the highest honors
available to a law student.
The Journal of Law & Education
The Journal of Law & Education is
published in conjunction with the
University of South Carolina Law and
Education Center. The Journal publishes
four issues annually and is recognized as
the foremost publication committed
exclusively to law and education.
Membership is awarded only to those
students who have demonstrated
outstanding writing ability as well as
technical proficiency in areas such as
proofreading and cite-checking during their
year long candidacy. Under the direction of
Professor Laurence W. Knowles, the
University of Louisville members of the
Journal are responsible for the research,
writing, and publication of all recent cases
in education as well as preparing synopses
of recent law review articles in the area.
The student editors, while retaining
ultimate editorial control, require members
to perform periodic proofreading and other
editorial duties to provide them with a more
varied learning experience.
Brandeis Brief
The Brandies Brief, an alumni magazine
published jointly by students and the School
6
of Law Development Office, serves the law
school and other members of the legal
community as a medium of information and
ideas. Under the supervision of the
development officer, and the direction of a
student editor-in-chief, student members
actively participate in gathering
information, writing articles and editing
copy for the publication. The Brandeis Brief
circulation has exceeded 10,000 and
includes all law school alumni, the student
body, various state and local officials, and
other law schools.
Moot Court Program
The Moot Court Program provides an
opportunity for training in the principles of
oral and written advocacy, to provide
nationwide exposure to second and third
year students through participation in
competitions, to sponsor and coordinate the
Henry Pirtle and Benjamin F. Washer Moot
Court competition and to coordinate the
first year appellate advocacy program. This
program is managed by a Moot Court Board
comprised of second, third and fourth year
students.
Students from the second, third, and
fourth year classes also volunteer to serve
as mentors and judges for the first year
program. Student judges hear and critique
the first year students' appellate arguments
alongside practicing attorneys and faculty
members. Upper class students are eligible
to compete in the following competitions;
National Moot Court Competition sponsored
by the law firm of Boehl, Stopher & Graves;
American Trial Lawyers Association
National Mock Trial Competition sponsored
by Gary M. Weiss; Saul Lefkowitz National
Trademark Moot Court Competition
sponsored by the law firm of Middleton &
Reutlinger; National Environmental Law
Moot Court Competition; Florida Bar
Association National Tax Moot Court
Competition; Irving R. Kaufman Memorial
Securities Law Moot Court Competition;
Phillip Jessup International Moot Court
Competition; American Bar Association
Negotiation Competition sponsored by the
law firm of Franklin and Hance; and the
National Health Law Moot Court
Competition sponsored by Pulmonary &
Internal Medicine Associates.
Internships
Senior students in good academic standing
are eligible to participate in the Legal Aid
Clinical Internship, Applied Criminal Justice
programs and the Judicial Internship
program. The Legal Aid and the Applied
Criminal Justice programs allow students
under supervision, to engage in all essential
steps of trial preparation and to make court
appearances. Legal Aid interns function in
civil cases while Applied Criminal Justice
students prosecute and defend criminal
cases. Students in the Judicial Internship
program are assigned to a federal or state
judge. They engage in research, draft
opinions and observe the stages of litigation
from the judicial position of impartiality.

-Student Organizations
Student Bar Association (SBA)
The Student Bar Association consists of
the entire student body of the law school and
serves as a liaison between students and
faculty and administrators. The SBA is
managed by elected officers and
representatives from both the day and
evening divisions. Specialized functions are
performed by standing and ad hoc
committees composed of student volunteers.
In addition, members of the SBA serve on
various faculty committees. The SBA is a
charter member of the American Law
Student Division, a national organization
sponsored by the American Bar Association.
Honor Council
The Honor Council enforces the law
school's Honor Code. Council members are
elected from the second and third year
classes. The Honor Council seeks to further
the highest standards of legal education and
ethical conduct and create a realization by
law students that they are carrying on a
great professional responsibility.
Women's Law Caucus
The Women's Law Caucus provides a
forum for discussion of problems unique to
female law students. Membership is
extended to all students interested in
preserving and advancing women's legal
rights and utilizing the feminine perspective
to enhance the legal system.
The Caucus meets regularly and presents
four to six programs per year. The Caucus
also maintains a collection of reference
materials on women's studies, The Women's
Law Caucus Collection: Culture, Change and
the Law.
Black Law Students Association (BLSA)
The Black Law Students Association
promotes academic excellence among black
law students and to improve relations in the
law school community. Through meetings
and workshops, BLSA encourages its
members to commit themselves to making
the legal profession more responsive to
specialized needs of the black community.
BLSA also participates in the recruiting of
black law students and provides assistance
to students preparing for law school.
•
Environmental Law Association (ELA)
Formed in the spring of 1991, the ELA's
goals are to educate the law school
population about the fast growing field of
environmental law and afford students the
opportunity to gain practical experience in
dealing with environmental issues. The ELA
plans speaker programs which bring in
practitioners from government, industry,
and public interest groups. A newsletter
showcasing current topics of interest will be
published. During the year a job bank will be
established allowing practitioners to target
students with a specific interest in
environmental law research projects and
clerking positions.
International Law Society (ILS)
The International Law Society encourages
increased interest in and understanding of
international and comparative law. The
Society sponsors speakers and other
activities toward this end. Membership is
open to any student expressing a desire to
learn about international or comparative
law.
Student Trial Lawyers Association
(STLA)
The STLA is designed for students who
are interested in trial practice. As an
addendum to the law curriculum, STLA
provides seminars on aspects of trial practice
conducted by noted trial attorneys. The
STLA co-sponsors the National Mock Trial
teams and hosts the Annual Trial Advocacy
Lecture series. In addition, the STLA has
video equipment and an extensive library of
video and audio cassettes on trial tactics.
Legal Fraternities
Three professional legal fraternities coexist
at the law school. Members are
actively recruited from the student body
with each fraternity emphasizing the special
advantages available to its affiliates.
Membership in legal fraternities is
conditioned upon invitation, payment of dues
and continued good standing as a law
student. Academic and social programs vary
with each fraternity.

-Honors and Awards
Brandeis Society
The Brandeis Society honors students who
demonstrate excellence in their legal studies.
Each year the society invites a select number
to become Brandeis Scholars: second and
third year students with grade point
averages in the top five and ten percent of
their classes, respectively. Through its
members who continue to achieve high
distinction throughout their careers, the
society promotes the values of scholarship
and service.
The Society is named after Supreme Court
Justice Mr. Louis D. Brandeis, whose
bequests have enriched the quality of the
law school's academic program and whose
example continues to inspire leadership and
dedication. The law school has been the
custodian of Mr. Brandeis' personal papers
since he began donating them in 1936.
Book Awards
Book Awards are awarded to students
each semester for academic achievement in
the classroom. Students are eligible for a
book award by receiving the highest grade in
the class. The awards are provided by
nationally recognized law publishers.
Dean's List
Dean's List distinction is awarded each
semester to students who obtain a 3.0 and
above grade point average for courses
completed that semester. Approximately 10-
20 per cent of each class achieves this honor
each semester.
